Cat Pain Relief Therapy

It is unbearable to see your dearest cat in pain. Every owner tries out different cat pain relief therapy to stop the pet’s suffering. There are a number of pain relief therapies and most of them are similar to those used by human beings.

The first issue that comes up in pain management of cats is to identify when the cat is in pain. Cats are very gentle and tolerant by nature. They have the capacity to bear the pain silently for a long time. To know that a cat is in pain look for the following symptoms:

  1. Inactivity and lethargy

  2. Agitated and restless

  3. Hissing frequently

  4. Lack of appetite

  5. Lack of interest in things and happenings around the house.


A cat can be in pain for many reasons - either the cat is hurt, has developed some wound, has developed UTI or dental problem, or suffering from a perennial disease like arthritis. In events of injury or wound, the pain will only disappear with time or when the injury and wound are completely cured. However, in case of arthritis or any such ailment which is difficult to cure completely, a suitable cat pain relief therapy is required. In such events when the ailment cannot be cured completely and pain becomes a way of life, a permanent solution is required so that the pain is minimized and the cat can rest in peace.

Research shows that pain killers are not the best way to control pain. Pain killers provide immediate relief but have many side effects. Prolonged use of pain killers can cause liver damage in felines.

To avoid regular intake of pain killers the owners can consider the alternative cat pain relief therapy. Some of the common therapies are as follows:

  1. Copper Collars :Copper collars are also used by human beings to get pain relief. Copper collars are worn by cats to reduce the pain. They have magnetic fields that act on controlling the pain. It acts by increasing the amount of oxygen in our blood and stimulating the amount of endorphins in our body. Copper collars are also believed to expedite the healing process.

  2. Cat Massage:There are a number of massage techniques that can help reduce pain if the cat is suffering from muscular pain in the back, or legs. The vet can advice and train the owner about various massages that can provide pain relief to cats.

  3. Magnetic Pads: Magnetic pads are very helpful for cats suffering from chronic pain, especially in cases of arthritis or joint pain. The magnetic pads are fitted on the mattress of the cat and work on the same theory as copper collar.


Only the vet can advise the best pain relief therapy for your cat. Each case is different and requires a different approach. In many cases doctors simply write pain killers in lesser dosage so that there is not much ill effect even after prolonged use. But if the intensity of pain is high then mild medication might not work and an alternative cat pain relief therapy is required.
